Eldgjá Canyon Trek – Highlands of Iceland

4-Day Adventure Through Fire and Ice

Join us on a unique 4-day trekking adventure through some of Iceland’s most dramatic highland landscapes — from the colorful rhyolite mountains of Landmannalaugar to the deep volcanic canyon of Eldgjá.

This is a journey through lava fields, glacier rivers, hidden valleys, and ancient eruption sites, guided by experienced local experts.

Day 1 – Reykjavík · Landmannalaugar · Peak Sveinstindur

After pickup in Reykjavík, we head into the Fjallabak Nature Reserve and arrive at Landmannalaugar, famous for its colorful mountains and natural hot springs.
Enjoy a short optional hike through the Laugahraun lava field and Grænagil Canyon, followed by a relaxing soak in the hot spring.

In the afternoon, we continue along the scenic F208 mountain road to Lake Langisjór, one of Iceland’s most remote and beautiful lakes. From there, we hike to the summit of Peak Sveinstindur (1,090 m), offering panoramic views over Vatnajökull Glacier and the highlands. Overnight in a mountain cabin by the Skaftá River.

Day 2 – Sveinstindur · Hvanngil Valley · Skælingar Cabin

After breakfast, the trail follows the river Skaftá through the colorful Hvanngil Valley.
We hike across ancient lava formations created by the Laki eruption of 1783, ending at the small and historic Skælingar cabin, once used by local farmers during sheep gathering.
Those who dare can take a refreshing dip in a natural cold pool.
Hiking distance: ~18 km, 7–8 hours.

Day 3 – Skælingar · Gjátindur · Eldgjá Canyon · Hólaskjól

Today we climb to Peak Gjátindur, overlooking the spectacular Eldgjá volcanic fissure, a 70-km-long canyon formed by one of the largest eruptions in history.
We visit the impressive Ófærufoss waterfall and follow the trail through the Eldgjá Canyon to Hólaskjól Highland Center, where a warm shower, barbecue dinner, and cozy cabin await.
Hiking distance: ~18 km, 7–8 hours.

Day 4 – Hólaskjól · Vík · South Coast · Reykjavík

After breakfast, we visit a hidden waterfall near Hólaskjól before heading south.
Stops along the way include the village of Vík, the Reynisfjara black-sand beach, and Seljalandsfoss waterfall — one of Iceland’s most photographed natural wonders.
Estimated arrival in Reykjavík: around 17:00.
